Start: So. Skyline turnout

Notes: First snow adventure of the year. Beautiful bluebird day. Just enough snow to keep it interesting but not enough to need snowshoes. 

DAY 3 - THE SCREEN

Windy as hell. There is a saying in Sanpete: when the wind blows in from the south, gail force running, adventure is afoot.

The whole Steinhaus gang reaches the top.

Notes: the route is new as the forest service has completed a much needed road project blocking off the many cut throughs. We used to climb straight up the ridge but the route today was more of a switchback. 

Up The Creek

Klaus explored the creek for the first time. Beautiful fall weather and wet dogs. 

MR PETEY BISHOP

Hikers: Kim Amy Juta Hope
Notes: A cold morning with light snowflakes. We hiked to the Bishop's turn off (and frankly it felt like I was just getting started after the itinerary of last week). Conditions are very dry with a RT of 1 hour 40 min.

DEAD WOMAN'S PASS

Inca Trail, Peru
Notes: A climb to 13,800 feet over a 3 day period.

NEW CANYON TO PETEY BISHOP'S

Hikers: Amy, Kim, Juta, HopE, and Mike
RT Distance: 4.5 miles
Elevation Gain: 1000 ft.

Kim's Notes: The last time we did this hike (from the bottom of New Canyon to Petey Bishop's turn off) was April 20, 2010. It was great to be back at it again and add to our elevation gain! We now have a new summit mark and are increasing our ability! PLUS, Amy gets the award for wearing a 10+ pack! Go Amy!

HIKING WITH QUINOA

Notes: The Internet tells me quinoa is the perfect grain. I agree, especially when you use it as ballast. One bag of coscto organic quinoa is four pounds and it moulds perfectly to the shape of a pack. Two bags are just right.

BEYOND THE DIVERSION

Notes: Lately we've been going beyond our usual turn around spot. Speeds are increasing, time is stretching, and now we climb the big hill beyond the diversion dam.

EARLY MORNING FASHION

Notes: Life is busy and we are behind in our blogging. Lots of hiking in January and February. Kim always looks pretty fashionable in the mornings. Me, I usually look and feel like I just crawled out of a collapsed building.

HAPPY DOG DAY

A hike up New Canyon approx 6000 feet. It's the middle of February in Utah and not a flake of snow to be found.

NEW CANYON

This hike was a little bit like where's Waldo, but not really. Instead, where's MikE?

MUDDY TRACKS CANYON

Hikers: The Usual Gang
Notes: Melting snow, a happy Kim. This is the spot just above EZ Peezey. It's always the indicator of moisture in the area.

MAMMOTH LAKE

Hikers:  Kim & Amy
Weather:  Windy with fast moving clouds and in and out sun.
Amy's Notes:  A great loop around the frozen lake with ups and downs and groves of trees to keep things interesting.  We initially started out on top but the wind threatened to blow us off the mountain, so we opted to stay in the trees.  Will be doing this one again.  For more info on Mammoth Lake:  http://stateparks.utah.gov/park/huntington-state-park

SNOWSHOEING SKYLINE DRIVE

Amy at the beginning of Skyline Drive- Fairview Canyon- Part of the Great Western Trail.

WEATHER: 40's (in January!). Beautiful and sunny!

KIM'S NOTES: Our first time snowshoeing. It was a great trek. We hiked for over an hour and a half over half frozen, half powder snow. It was a great workout with a great view. We will definitely do it again.

BOX CANYON

WEATHER: Sunny and warm (around 33˚). Too warm for January.

KIM'S NOTES: Sam had a friend from Florida come visit. It was his first time to Utah and his first time even seeing snow. It was a fun, quick hike and all would have been well if I hadn't gotten the car stuck. Cory, grudgingly, came to pull us out. Live and learn.

A SLIPPERY NEW CANYON

WEATHER: 20's, foggy with the sun trying to peak through

KIM'S NOTES: It was chillier than it's been. The snow was frozen into ice in the tire tracks and made for slippery hiking. Amy put on her ice cleats on the way home. Kim toughed it out (and thankfully didn't slip).

AMY'S NOTES: Beautiful new snow and more snow while walking.  The lion hunter provided good tracks and all is well.

WEATHER: upper 30's, partly cloudy

KIM'S NOTES: So tired. Not feeling well this day, thus the easy trail. Great to get out though and wonderful for a sinus infection to breathe in the clean, crisp, cold air.
